Noble Couple with King James Bible; Painting in progress. At this stage the Oil paint has been brushed on, allowed to dry and the pick-out stage is complete. I started the pick-out at about 5:00pm in the evening and finished at about 6:30am the next morning. The "Pick-Out" stage is where I take a brush and paint thinner and carefully pull out the lighter values in the painting. It is like sculpting in two dimensions. I enjoy it a lot, but it can be grueling because it must be done all in one sitting while the paint is still workable. This is usually a window of 10-14 hours. Now I let it set for 2-3 days before adding Conte crayon, Negro pencil, color pencil, air brush, and occasionally even touches of opaque media, like Oils or Acrylics.
